Which Window Treatments Offer the Most Privacy?

April 30, 2018

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like most homeowners, getting New York window treatments that give you privacy and sound blocking to maintain your castle is important to you. Any window covering is preferable to an uncovered window. However there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, even on hard to cover windows.

Providing Privacy on Specialty Windows

All of the large, standard windows in your house are easy to cover with just about any window treatment such as New York shutters, drapes, or blinds|.

But there might be some situations when you need a specific style of window treatment to get the privacy you want. These include:

  • Windows in the bathroom where excess moisture can ruin fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are long and thin on which window treatments can be knocked around by the door’s movement.

  • Specialty-shape windows like eyebrows, circular windows, bay windows, etc., where typical rectangular blinds and curtains can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that are difficult to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you’ll need window treatments that go above and beyond to provide privacy to your space.

As a plus, find window treatments that offer good sound control to keep random noise outside and prevent neighbors from overhearing.

The Window Treatments That Give You The Most Privacy

The most privacy-friendly window treatment we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when total privacy and sound control is what you want. When you want to let light in and see outdoors, just give the louvers a tilt. For taller windows, you can always position the louvers at an angle so light can come in but passersby can’t see in.

Plantation shutters are also great for specialty-shaped windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are waterproof, they’re an excellent choice for bathrooms.

Another privacy-friendly window treatment is roller shades. Roller shades take up very little space above the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent outsiders from seeing into your home. Though they can’t be cut to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes in moisture-resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window treatment adds a minimum amount of privacy, there are two that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add a light feeling to a room. Yet they’re fairly translucent and can be seen through fairly easily, particularly when it’s dark out.

Another product that isn’t great for privacy are aluminum or heavy blinds, which can bend and/or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t completely close the blinds due to breakage, then they’re not providing much privacy at all.
