What To Expect At Your New York In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

Before you decide ont what window treatment to buy, some companies, like Sunburst, recommend an in-home consultation. By bringing the treatments to your home, we can present how various window coverings would work in your room. You’ll find how easy it is to find the perfect treatments when you aren’t in the unrealistic showroom.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how can bringing samples to your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst regularly performs these in-home consultations, and here’s what you will experience at your appointment.

Walking Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Begin by arranging an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already can picture the perfect coverings for you window, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to bring you some options available for your preferred product. We will also bring other options, so you can be sure that your room matches your ideas.

After we come to your house, we’ll sit down and figure out what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency needs, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also want to know how the room is used and what ambiance you are looking to acheive. The final objective is to imagine what your decor will ultimately look like with the treatments installed.

That may require going through different products and measure each style against each other. Most people should explore a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the perfect stain to coordinate with the room. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once a decision is made, we’ll take the exact measurements of your windows. We usually measure the windows in each room—even if you only want to fit treatments for some of your windows. We perform this service because many of our clients ask to get future window treatments quickly. At the end of the appointment, we will walk you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will perform an easy and enjoyable in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment salesperson. After all, the quality of your consultation experience mirrors the quality of the window treatments.

Above all else, your rep should be careful and professional. The rep should show up as scheduled, clean and presentable, and offer to cover their shoes with shoe booties. Your consultant should always give you product and company literature and pricing information.

When discussing pricing, you should expect a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, jotted down on a blank page or the back of a business card. And never accept a quote before they take any window measurements. You need to be able to follow how much product and installation should cost. Finally, search for any references and online reviews to feel confident in your order.
