What To Expect During Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Dennis Rooney

As you start the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, recommend an in-home consultation. By bringing samples to your home, we can present how different window treatments would work in your room. This conversation helps you understand your options and helps you feel great about your decision.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how can showing you different products at your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst regularly performs these in-home consultations, and here’s what you will experience at your appointment.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Begin by arranging an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already can picture the perfect coverings for you window, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to bring you some options available for your preferred product. We will also show additional treatments, so you can be sure that your room matches your ideas.

After we come to your house, we’ll sit down and discuss what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also ask about how the room is used and what ambiance you are looking to acheive. We want to execute your final vision, so the more information, the better.

We might show you many different products and measure each style against each other. Most people should explore a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the perfect stain to coordinate with the room. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll find the exact measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows in each room—even if you only want to fit treatments for some of your windows. We perform this service because many of our clients ask to get future shutters or blinds quickly. At the end of the appointment, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will give you professional in-home consultation, there are some things you should never experience from any window treatment salesperson. After all, the quality of your consultation experience mirrors the quality of the window treatments.

Above all else, your salesperson should be careful and professional. The rep should show up as scheduled, with all samples requested, and offer to cover their shoes with shoe booties. Your consultant should always give you product and company brochures and pricing information.

When discussing pricing, you should always get a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, scribbled on a blank page or the back of a business card. And always reject pricing information before they take any window measurements. You need to be able to follow how much product and installation should cost. If an estimate ever seems unbelievable, please ask for references and search for the company’s online reviews.
